History: What is the HCG Diet?

(REMINDER – while our diet is based on the original HCG diet, our drops are *not* HCG drops – read below to learn more about the history behind our program and why we prefer our all-natural, effective alternative to HCG drops.)

The HCG Diet was created by Albert Theodore William Simeons M.D.,  a British endocrinologist practicing in Rome, Italy. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) or HCG, is a “naturally occurring hormone” that is produced during a women’s pregnancy by the developing embryo soon after conception and later is found in the placenta. During pregnancy, HCG helps the fetus develop by breaking down the mother’s body fat for energy and diverting calories from the mother to the fetus.

After years of studying the problem of excess weight and obesity, Simeons discovered the power of HCG and it’s ability to help patients lose weight.

While visiting India, he observed doctors administering HCG in small doses to overweight patients who had large hips, buttocks and thighs.

The results showed that their ravenous appetite disappeared and their shape also changed. Their “Abnormal Fat deposits from their hips also disappeared. It was also perfectly evident that only Abnormal Fat was being consumed, as there were no signs of any depletion of Normal Fat. Their skin remained fresh and gradually their figures became entirely normal.” “The results were, according to him, “nothing short of miraculous.”

Through trial and error, and vigorous study, he proposed an innovative dietary model, that later became known as the HCG VLCD diet (human chorionic gonadotropin very low calorie diet). He later documented his theory and protocols in his book “Pounds and Inches. A New Approach to Obesity.”

Why The HCG Diet Is Different From Other Diets

The HCG diet is different from other weight loss programs because the hormone actually boosts your metabolism, causing you to burn, or metabolize unhealthy fat.  This metabolic process provides additional calories (estimated to be up to 4,000 calories a day) and keeps you from feeling hungry. Typically, when your body takes in fewer calories than it burns (i.e. low calorie diet), the body’s natural response is to slow down the metabolism and preserve fat stores. This is why so many folks on a “low calorie” or reduced calorie diet eventually stall out, usually become tired, cranky and stop losing weight.

The HCG hormone (in your program, our all natural, equally effective alternative drops) speeds up the metabolism, signaling your body to burn fat. It’s estimated that by following the HCG diet you’ll boost your metabolism by up to 30%.

Patients who start the HCG diet notice they are losing inches almost immediately. The change in metabolism and burning of unhealthy fat, releases additional calories, estimated to be up to 4,000 calories a day. These extra calories allow someone to be on a low calorie diet, lose weight without feeling hungry, feeling tired, or lose muscle mass.

There Are Three Different Forms Of Bodily Fat

  1. Structural Fat fills in the gaps between various organs and acts as a protective layer of tissue.
  2. Reserve Fat is used as fuel when nutritional intake is insufficient to meet the body’s demands. This is typically triggered when a person isn’t getting enough carbohydrates or goes into ketosis.
  3. Abnormal or “Yellow” Fat is the unhealthy fat located just under the skin. Known as visceral fat and stored in the fat cells in the belly, buttocks, and hips, it’s associated creating inflammation and increasing the risk of heart attack, strokes, and certain cancers.

Simeons showed that most diets deplete the healthy Reserve Fat and then the Structural Fat. Our diet removes the unhealthy yellow fat only.

The Hypothalamus and Weight Loss

The hypothalamus is a small but extremely important gland in the brain.

It’s located at the base of the brain, near the pituitary gland.

While it’s very small, the hypothalamus plays a crucial role in many important functions, including:

  • releasing hormones
  • regulating body temperature
  • maintaining daily physiological cycles
  • controlling appetite

It appears that almost everything the Hypothalamus does, is related in some way, to weight management and controlled weight loss.

HCG/( and our drops) positively affects the hypothalamus gland, and Dr. Simeons hypothesized that the slimming of young boys (he observed in India) being treated with HCG was because of the positive effect HCG had on the hypothalamus gland, because this gland is responsible, in part, for the regulation of normal and abnormal body fat.

After a decade of persistent research, Dr. Simeons proved that when both the correct amount of HCG and his unique, low calorie, no oil, food plan were followed, both males and females had the ability to lose extraordinary amounts of abnormal body fat in relatively short periods of time.

As word spread about Dr. Simeons work with HCG and dieting, doctors from around the world traveled to Rome to learn more about his work.  Due to this extraordinary interest, in 1967 he published Pounds and Inches, a New Approach to Obesity to help Health Care Professionals and lay people alike, better understand his findings.

Over the years, the HCG Diet popularity declined, mostly due to the attrition of practitioners who believed in and understood Dr. Simeons’ work.  Even though there were several HCG Diet studies conducted in the mid-70s, these studies didn’t follow Simeons’ protocol exactly and Simeons’ HCG Diet never received FDA approval for better weight loss results than common dieting. Big Pharma has never liked competition and HCG was thorn in their side.

The quest for new and improved “weight loss” drugs was the holy grail. Unfortunately as we’ve seen many have come and gone including Fen-phen which was a combination of the serotonin-booster fenfluramine and the stimulant phentermine. Neither drug produced much weight loss on its own, but combined they were superstars.

After reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, primarily in women who had been undergoing treatment with fenphen or (dex)fenfluramine, the FDA requested its withdrawal from the market in September 1997.

In 2007, Kevin Trudeau released a book called “The Weight Loss Cure, What THEY Don’t Want You To Know”, which included enough information about the HCG Simeons diet to again create interest in Dr. ATW Simeons original work.  Shortly thereafter, a few ‘pioneer’ Professional Clinics in the US began offering HCG for weight loss.

The popularity of HCG has increased over the last couple of decades as patients, and doctors witness its life changing effects.

Natural Homeopathic Nutritional Formulations vs. Prescription HCG Drops

Homeopathic treatment has been in existence for more than 150 years. The focus is on using natural substances to enable the body to heal and treat itself.

Homeopathic HCG, has been shown to be a viable alternative to expensive prescription HCG and thousands of patients have benefited from using this over the counter “remedy.” Unfortunately there seems to always be some bad apples in every bunch. The popularity of “homeopathic HCG drops” led to some fly by night companies who sold products that were later found to “worthless.” While not dangerous, the FDA decided to ban all homeopathic HCG products. There may be some suppliers on the Internet, but these products are walking on thin ice.

The metabolic enhancing supplements used in the Metabolic Restoration Program DO NOT CONTAIN ANY HCG. The formulas instead use a combination of novel homeopathic ingredients, amino acids, herbals, and nutritionals, to mimic the human hormone HCG, without containing any HCG hormone. The results of using these ALL NATURAL, non HCG products, along with the new more flexible diet,  are the same, quick and dramatic weight loss.

The metabolic enhancing supplements are compatible with all prescription medications, and are safe for anyone to use.*

Original HCG Diet Foods

The original menu was around 500 calories a day. A sample of the diet is as follows:

  • Breakfast: Coffee or tea without sugar; only one tablespoon of milk every 24 hours; stevia may be used. Patients were encouraged to skip breakfast.
  • Lunch: 100 grams of fresh white fish, and all visible fat must be carefully removed before cooking, and the meat must be weighed raw. It must be boiled or grilled without the addition of fat. One vegetable to be eaten with the meat (typically a dark, leafy green vegetable). One breadstick, and an apple, orange, or handful of strawberries.
  • Dinner: 100 grams of chicken breast, grilled without the skin and without the addition of fat. Sides are the same as the lunch option.

Dr. Simeons’ original 500-calorie HCG diet is rather restrictive and has come under attack for being a “starvation diet.” This was my initial reaction when I first learned of the HCG diet. However, the results I consistently saw in my patients doing the HCG diet were impressive.

Much has changed in what we now know about calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, and a person’s metabolism. There are still those who say a calorie is a calorie, however we know that most folks lose the most weight and keep it off by following a low to moderate carbohydrate, protein rich diet (Paleo, Atkins, Ketogenic, etc.).

The Metabolic Restoration Program and The New Flexible HCG Diet

The new, more flexible HCG diet, allows for more calories, 800-1200mg a day, and numerous additional food choices.

Patients who use my recommend metabolic boosting supplements, and follow this new diet typically lose just as much weight as those on the more restrictive 500 -calorie HCG Diet.

Females typically lose half a pound a day and males up to a pound a day. Results will vary depending on each person’s metabolism, activity levels, and of course diet compliance.

New Flexible HCG Diet Up To 800 Calories A Day

The typical American diet of 2,000 calories consists of 200-300 grams a day. Anything less than 120 carb grams a day is considered a “low carb” diet.” The Atkins Diet and Keto Diet are based on 20-25 grams of carbohydrate. The original Simeons protocol allowed for 30-40 grams of carbs a day.

The Metabolic Restoration Program using the New More Flexible Diet, allows for up 40-50 grams of carbohydrate a day.

“The Loading Phase-”. Try to eat high fat foods, cheese, butter, ice cream, avocados, etc. Overeat and enjoy yourself. Don’t worry, you may gain a few pounds, but they will come right off.

Three times a day, drip 15 drops under the tongue, let dissolve for one minute before swallowing. Don’t eat or drink anything 15 minutes before or after you take the drops. The anti-inflammatory drops burn 1,500-4,000 calories a day of yellow or unhealthy visceral fat (especially hip, thigh and belly fat).

“The Weight Loss Phase.” Continue to take your Anti-Inflammatory Weight Loss Drops, three times a day and begin eating the Phase 2 Diet.

You’ll stay in this phase until you reach your desired weight loss goal, or you stall out for good. You need to do this phase a minimum of 23 days. You can stay in phase 2 and on the diet as long as you’re losing weight and feel good. Unlike the original Simeon’s Diet, there is no need to “cycle” or discontinue the drops every 40 days. This is one of many benefits of using the all-natural fat burning drops.

Phase 3: “The Stabilization Phase.”  Once you’ve reached your desired weight loss goal or have stalled out indefinitely, you’ll need to go into this phase. This phase involves discontinuing the Anti-Inflammatory Weight Loss Diet Drops for 3 days while you stay continue eating the phase 2 diet. Then on day 4, stay off the drops and carefully start adding back, restricted foods, while increasing total calorie intake. See Phase 3 Strategies below.

*See Phase 3 Stabilization information.

Phase 4: “The Maintenance Phase.”  Once you’ve reached your weight loss goal, you’ll choose one or more of these diet strategies for long-term maintenance.

Be prepared! Make sure that non approved foods are put away in a separate cabinet or shelf of the fridge or removed from your kitchen entirely.
If feeling hungry, try taking an extra dose of drops or eating a little more protein.

MAKE SURE to drink enough water! The key to flushing your body and maintaining progress is drinking approximately your body weight in ounces per day. You can add flavored stevia drops, lemon or lime juice, or If your weight loss stalls for 2 days, have an all protein day – we like to put a nice steak on the grill the night before and then eat it throughout the day so it feels like a treat.

Set aside some time one day a week to shop and prep your food for the following week. For example, you can cook meat in bulk, pre-portion your meat into small pyrex containers, freeze, and then defrost to add to meals with fresh veggies throughout the week.

If you MUST eat out for work or social functions, study the menu ahead of time to pick your best option that best follows program guidelines or brown bag and bring your own.

If having sweet cravings, see approved extras and recipes for safe “cheats” such as sugar free jello and stevia sweetened “cookies,” or try frozen strawberries drizzled in Stevia

Do not use Truvia – it is not pure Stevia and will stall your diet

If having trouble getting in all your veggies, try making  a “green” morning smoothie. (see recipes for Juno’s favorite!)

Always keep easy no-cook protein options on hand – a precooked rotisserie chicken with the skin removed or nitrate free approved sandwich meats are great options

Take a photo or print out the list of approved and disallowed foods to have on hand when you are at the grocery store or not at home.
Save the website and Facebook group in your phone memos or on your phone home screen for easy, instant access

Keep plenty of great tasting organic fruits on vegetables on hand at all times for easy snacks – most grocery stores sell organic apples in large bags as a more cost effective option.

On rare occasions, you might experience headaches or stomach discomfort in the first few days of the diet – this is detoxing and will go away in 2-3 days at max. For headache relief, you can drink bone broth, supplement with extra magnesium or potassium, or take ibuprofen or other headache remedies.

IMPORTANT: Anytime you’ve not lost at least half a pound for two consecutive days, then do an ALL PROTEIN DAY to jump-start your metabolism.

Remember you may not lose weight every day. This is normal. If you wake up and weight and haven’t lost anything, no problem. However, if on the following day you wake up and weight and haven’t lost at least half a pound then you should do an ALL PROTEIN DAY.

How to Do an All Protein Day

On an all protein day you eat 800-1,000 calories of protein and nothing else. All protein choices are allowed but skip the fruits, veggies, and snacks.

After doing an all protein day you should find that when weighting in the next day you’ve lost a half a pound or more. Then go back on the regular restricted calorie diet (RCD).

Feeling Hungry: The first few days of starting phase 2 you may be hungry. If so, simply eat more of the allowed foods. Protein seems to be most satisfying. Eventually as your body adjusts to the diet, you won’t be hungry.

Proteins: 100-150 grams per day (or 400-600 calories a day)
New studies are proving Atkins and others to be correct-the higher the protein intake the less hungry a person will be and the faster they will lose weight. Contrary to what you may have heard high protein doesn’t damage kidney or liver cells and only is an issue in those with kidney or liver failure!

  • Eggs & egg beaters
  • beef (lean, grass fed best) -choose from steak, hamburger-patties, fillet, beef tips, flat iron, or flank
  • chicken breast (skinless)
  • white meat of turkey
  • turkey burgers (careful of additives if purchase premade)
  • Greek yogurt (MUST be no sugar added!)
  • cottage cheese
  • Seafood: sea bass, sole, flounder, halibut, grouper, snapper, tilapia, perch, oysters, lobster, crab, shrimp, scallops, and clams.

Other Protein Options

Bars: Extend, Atkins, Quest, and Detour brands of high protein low sugar bars.

Shakes: Extend, Pure Protein, EAS Light, Muscle Milk Light, Premier Protein brands of high protein, low sugar shakes (calories 160 or less, 2-3 sugars or less 10 protein or more) are all approved.

Luncheon meats, preferably hormone, additive and nitrate free: turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef. Hormel sliced lunch-meat (available at Wal Mart and other select stores) and Applegate sliced lunch meat (available at Wholefoods and other select stores) are two good choices.

Chicken, beef and vegetable stock-use as much as you like. Check to make sure no added sugar.
